It's Easier Than You Think

  Situation 1

Do you ever get caught in that awkward situation where you and another person are walking in opposite directions but on the same path, and one person needs to swerve a little bit, but both people swerve at the same time--towards the same side?  Then to compensate, both people swerve the other direction, thus enacting a little 'boy this is awkward' dance?

Situation 2

How about when there is a narrow passage, wide enough for one person, but there are two people to go through?  You start, then you stop, but by then the other person has stopped, and there is an open passage but no traffic at all.

It's Easier Than You Think

Luckily, Beef figured it out.  The next time you encounter Situation 1, step to your right.  Even if the other person steps to his/her left (mirroring you, blocking the path) don't swerve.  This may seem rude on the surface, but in fact it is indecision that leads to awkwardness--just get in the habit of always going to the right*.

When you find yourself in Situation 2, always let the other person go first.  Don't stutter step or hesitate.  If the other person refuses to go, use the palm up invitation and a small nod.  This will almost always work--at least as long as it is not another guy.

*You may be saying 'Beef, why are you prejudiced?  Why can't I go to, say, the left side--and always stick with that?'  But surely you see the problem this would cause, when everbody adopts this solution; you going to your left, the other person going (correctly) to his/her right, and we have the same awkward situation--only this time, because there's no indecision, both parties just keep walking until they collide (and not in the Howie Day romantic-style).
