Garbage Personified

4.18.06

I'm trying to do less complaining because I know it is one of the least appealing facets of my personality (and that's saying something).  Today, though, something busted my chops badly enough that we need to address it.

First of all let's just establish two facts that should be undisputed:

  1. Beethoven's 9th Symphony is probably the high point in the history of music.  Doesn't mean it has to be your favorite song--it's not mine--but it is the most monumental accomplishment we've had so far in that field.
  2. Hostel is an incredibly disgusting film with one of the least creative premises in the horror genre, ever.  Silence of the Lambs was disturbing and inventive.  Se7en was terrifying and well-done.  Hostel is an excuse by the most overrated director in the business to show people being subjected to terrible sexually motivated torture.

I'm not advocating banning Hostel.  I would hope that our general populace is discerning enough that we can find better sources for entertainment (exhibit a: Super Troopers).  But today, I saw a commercial for the new DVD.  Background music?  The climactic portion of Beethoven's 9th.

This made me want to punch Mr. Tarantino in the face.  For somebody who made his name (at least in part) by employing creative and perfectly chosen music for his films, this was the most nauseating juxtaposition in recent memory.  Shameless.

Luckily I restrained myself from punching the TV.  I can only hope that the main bill for the Friday Night Fight in Heaven one day is Tarantino-Beethoven.  You can bet that Beef will have front row seats.
